The mystery of Master Chicoo and Baby Munmun

If you like watching Hindi films from the Seventies, chances are you remember this child actor appearing in a bunch of them.

He is Master Chicoo — the kid requesting Vidya Sinha for a “tote aur bandar ki kahaani” in the title track of Rajnigandha (1974). He is also seen as the young Asrani in Fakira (1976) and Johnny Walker’s son in Sanjog (1972).

Chicoo is also credited as Master Chikkoo/ Chikku/ Chikoo/ Chiku in various films he featured in.

Often, Chicoo was cast as a girl like in Salaakhen (1975), Raja Rani (1973) and a very brief (and perhaps an uncredited) appearance in Naseeb (1981).

Around the same time, another child artist Baby Munmun was seen in Jeevan Jyoti (1977) and the children’s film Minoo (1977). Munmun, if you notice, is the spitting image of Chicoo.

Which brings me to my question and the likely scenarios involved:

  • Are Munmun and Chicoo the same?
  • Are they twins?
  • Or are they siblings with strong resemblance like the more famous Master Bittoo-Rajoo?

This mystery has long bothered me and no amount of trawling on the internet has helped. So, if you enjoy pointless trivia and can crack the connection, please help.

Otherwise, I would only have to rely on my wishful thinking that in the distant future Chicoo/ Munmun’s great grand kids would somehow stumble on this page and solve the ‘Chicoo kaun, Munmun kaun’ puzzle for me.
