For many Hindi film banners of the Sixties and Seventies, having an inspirational quote or a signature shayari play before the opening credits rolled was a norm. These lines were mostly recited by well-known screen personalities with a commanding voice.
While Nasir Hussain’s NH Films and Mehboob Productions’ opening lines remain the most iconic and well-recognized, several other production companies of that era have employed the trend in their own unique fashion. Here are some of my favourites:
1. Sultan Ahmed’s Sultan Productions

“Kashtiyaan sabki kinaare pe pahunch jaati hain/ Nakhuda jinka nahin unka Khuda hota hai” ~ Amir Minai
Voice: Prithviraj Kapoor
2. Time Films

“Fanoos ban ke jiski hifaazat hawa kare, woh shamma kya bujhe jise roshan Khuda kare”
Writer and VO artist – both unknown
3. Mangatram Films

In Mangatram Films’ Hasina Maan Jaayegi (1968), the same couplet can be heard in Manmohan Krishna’s soft voice. It would be interesting to know the story (if any) behind the popularity of this sher since some more production houses too have used it.
4. Gautam Pictures

“Mat suno gar bura kahe koi, mat kaho gar bura kare koi. Rok lo gar ghalat chale koi, baksh do gar khataa kare koi” ~ Mirza Ghalib
5. Ratan Mohan’s RM Art Productions

“Khudi ko kar buland itna ki har taqdeer se pehle, Khuda bande se ḳhud poochhe bata teri razaa kya hai” ~ Iqbal
Voice: Unknown
6. Salim Akhtar’s Aftab Pictures Pvt Ltd

“Noor-e-haq shamme ilaahi ko bujha sakta hai kaun, jiska haami ho Khuda usko mita sakta hai kaun”
Over time, various film personalities like Shatrughan Sinha, Kader Khan and Raza Murad have delivered this famous intro.
Also, any idea about the ownership of this sher?
7. Mohan Kumar’s EmKay Films P Ltd

“Apni hi karni ka phal hai nekiyaan ruswaiyaan, aapke peechhe chalengi aap ki parchhaiyaan”
Voice: Harish Bhimani, maybe?
8. Mehboob Khan’s Mehboob Productions

“Muddai lakh bura chaahe to kya hota hai, wohi hota hai jo manzoor-e-Khuda hota hai” ~ Mast Kalkattvi
Voice: Actor musician Rafiq Ghaznavi
You can read more about Khan and Ghaznavi’s association and the story behind this classic intro here.
9. Nasir Hussain’s NH Films

The uber popular intro uses Jigar Moradabadi’s verses with a slight twist:
PS: All my efforts at finding about the identity of the person reciting these iconic lines have come to naught. REALLY need to know this because the delivery of “Tho-karrr mein zamaana hai” is too cool to remain unsung.
10. Bahry Films

An unidentified voice recites Sahir in Hum Se Hai Zamana (1983).
“Hazaar barq gire lakh aandhiyaan uthe, who phool khil ke rahenge jo khilne waale hain” ~ Sahir Ludhianvi
11. The Roop Enterprise

Champion stuff by Kader Khan in The Roop Enterprise’s Shakka (1981) and Shukriyaa (1989). It’s quite possible that Khan may have penned this couplet.
“Mushkil mein musibat mein musarrat mein khushi mein, main teri razaa par hi faqat naaz karunga / Har waqt mein har haal mein har kaam se pehle main naam tera le ke hi aaghaaz karunga.”
12. Adarsh Arts

“Aadmi bura nahin, waqt bura hota hai/ jiska koi nahin uska Khuda hota hai.”
Again, identities of the writer and voice over artist remain unknown.
13. Banner: Shehnaz Films

Movie: Daulat Ki Jung (1992) | Writer and voice over artist: unknown
